Inside you will find interviews, features, and comics that cover all things D&D.
It’s been five years since Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition launched, and the explosion of D&D’s popularity since then has been a wonder to behold! Now fans can celebrate D&D through the D&D Sapphire Anniversary Dice Set, available directly from Wizards of the Coast. The set commemorates both #5yearsof5e AND forty-five years since D&D’s first publication in 1974.
In honor of the original release year of Dungeons & Dragons, 1974 sets of this custom-crafted treasure will be available to the public for this special occasion.
“When the D&D team realized the sapphire is the traditional anniversary stone for both five years and forty-five years, and that adding a laboratory-created sapphire to a twenty-sided die wouldn’t jeopardize the integrity of a roll, we couldn’t pass up the chance to make something really cool to celebrate the milestones” said Nathan Stewart, VP of the D&D Franchise at Wizards of the Coast. “The team put together a fun product for our fans that includes art and newly updated stats for sapphire dragons, making these classic dragons ready for play in your next D&D session.”
The D&D Sapphire Anniversary Dice Set: Collector’s Limited Edition is a fantastic way to commemorate forty-five years of lasting friendships fueled by stories of imagination and adventure.

Q: How durable and balanced is the d20 housing the lab-grown sapphire?
A: The d20 features a lab grown sapphire anchored through a revolutionary design process guaranteeing the stability of the stone within the surface of the dice. Level Up Dice completely redesigned the entire d20—from internal balance to all 20 sides—to not only fit the custom-designed gemstone securely but to maintain precision balance for rolling. By working with the laboratory over a 6-month period, we created a unique, never-before-made shape and design of the sapphire to guarantee a perfect fit and balance. The end result is a never-before-seen creation: a balanced aluminum D20 containing a custom lab-grown sapphire.
The 6063 grade aluminum used in the dice is highly durable—it is the same grade used in airplane construction and other industrial purposes.
Q: How are the D&D Sapphire Anniversary Dice Sets constructed?
A: Each die is created using CNC machines from billets of aluminum alloy, 6063. Using the 6063 grade allows for more complex shapes, and a bright and durable anodized finish while using the CNC mills gives us the most precisely weighted dice at 99.5% precision rate. Once each individual die is cut, it is then engraved to maintain perfect balance. The dice have been tumble-tested for durability at over 5,000 rolls.
Anodization: “Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the metal surface into a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish.” We utilize Hard Anodization, which also increases hardness and wear resistance.
CNC Mills: CNC mills allow for pre-programmed machines to cut the dice to a 99.5% precision and then allow for complex designs and numbering that can be created on each individual face of the die. Using “computer numerical control” overrides human error during the machining process.
Q: How are the D&D Sapphire Anniversary Dice Set dice balanced?
A: The dice have been custom designed for optimal balance, with the engraving process of each side machined to counterbalance the added weight of the sapphire. The result is a balanced dice that will give you perfect rolls, all while maintaining their sparkle!
For the remainder of the set, our proprietary CnC machining is applied to maintain our standard 99.5% precision with every roll, based on the center of gravity balance.
Q: How large is the lab-grown sapphire?
A: The total mass of the custom shaped, lab-grown sapphire is 1.43 carats, which includes the internal portion that was designed for balance and durability.
Q: What is the best way to use and care for the D&D Sapphire Anniversary Dice Set?
A: Although the aluminum is very light, we recommend using a rolling tray such as the one provided with your set to protect your table and the dice.
For general care, a polishing cloth (such as one used on glasses) can be used to remove fingerprints from handling.
